Can you share prescription drugs?

On Behalf of | Jun 12, 2019 | drug offenses, prescription fraud | 0 comments

Many times, when you get a prescription from a doctor in Texas, you do not end up using all of the medication. You may wonder if you can share it with someone else who needs it. This is a common tactic that many people use to share antibiotics and other medications with friends and family who maybe cannot afford their own prescription, but it is a dangerous practice, and according to Pharmacy Times, an illegal one, too.

Often, sharing medications leads to abuse. It is common for people to become addicted to medications because they can get them from people they know. Another issue is that when you share medication, it means you are not taking all of it, which in the case of antibiotics and other medications can be dangerous for you. You need to take all of a prescription to get the full benefits. So, by sharing an antibiotic, for example, you and the person you share with are really not getting the benefits you should from it.

It is illegal to share prescription medication. Even if you do not charge others for it, depending on the medication, you could face felony charges. Another thing to think about is allergic reactions. If you share medication with someone who is allergic and they have a fatal reaction, you could face murder charges.

While you may think that you are doing a good thing by sharing prescription drugs with a friend or family member, in almost all cases, it is a bad idea. You could cause harm to yourself or the other person. You could also end up with a criminal charge. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
