How does mental health affect addiction?

On Behalf of | Mar 25, 2022 | drug offenses | 0 comments

Often, people who struggle with substance abuse also struggle with drug charges. If you find yourself hitting a wall for recovery, it may be due to other mental health conditions. According to MentalHealth.gov, mental health problems may impact whether a person becomes addicted to illicit substances.

Understanding how addiction forms can help some people learn to fight it.

Substance abuse disorder

If you consider yourself addicted to a substance, you may have a substance abuse disorder. Those who have substance abuse disorders may find themselves unable to function in society because of their addiction. For example, you may find yourself unable to make it to work or school. You may engage in secretive behavior or dangerous behavior to obtain substances. Family and friends may notice sudden mood swings and changes in your personality.

Co-occurring disorders

Did you know that about a quarter of all adults with mental health conditions also have a substance abuse problem? Some people do not recognize when they have a mental health disorder, while others cannot afford or do not know how to seek help. You may seek illicit substances as a subconscious way to medicate the symptoms of your mental health condition. The most common mental health problems associated with substance abuse disorder include personality disorders, depression, schizophrenia and depression.

In addition to seeking substances to help alleviate the symptoms, some substances cause the symptoms. For example, you may experiment with a drug out of curiosity and it may give you signs of depression or anxiety over time. The cycle of symptoms may worsen your addiction.
